Prince Edward Island Day 2

We started our morning with a program called Eyes on the Skies. We learned about solar telescope filters and even got to see the sun through the telescope.

We headed out in the car to explore the far expanses of PEI NHP. We stopped at Delvay to see the old hotel and look at the dunes.

Then we headed to Brackley Beach for a sand castle building class.

We arrived early and played out int he water and on the sandbar. The beach was shockingly empty.

We met Maurice and he taught us how to start by digging up a huge pile of sand and layering it with water. Then we learned to build spires and towers and carve them using rulers, shovels and a few other tools.

We worked for several hours practicing techniques we learned.

IMG_2168

We were so busy we didn’t see that the beach got jam packed. Soon there were about 50 castles going under Maurice’s teachings and countless other people just playing and enjoying the sun.

Prince Edward Island Day 1

Today we left Nova Scotia behind and drove to Prince Edward Island. We arrived at our campsite and got set up with no issues. We have full hookups this week but will move campsites tomorrow since we extended our stay here late and couldn’t get the same site all 4 nights.

We headed out to Green Gables to spend the afternoon. We watched a video about the site and then explored the visitors center. We saw Lucy Maud Montgomery’s typewriter. Many of the letters on the keys were worn off because she used it so often.

IMG_2088

We tried on “Anne’s Hat” as part of one of our activities from our XPlorers books.

IMG_2089

We read more about L.M. Montgomery and had to discover the year that Anne of Green Gables was published, 1908.

IMG_2094

We explored the barn and did a scavenger hunt in or books.

IMG_2095

IMG_2096

We stopped at the general store and bought a Raspberry Cordial to share. It was very fizzy and refreshing. What better what to enjoy it than sitting in the shade of the green gabled house.

IMG_2102

IMG_2105

Inside the house we were impressed with the details form the stories. B spotted the raspberry cordial on the shelf in the pantry.

IMG_2108

In Anne’s room, Emmerson spotted the puff sleeved dress.

IMG_2110

There was even the slate that Anne used to crack Gilbert over the head!

IMG_2112

We walked the gardens and checked out every flower.

IMG_2118

We tried really hard to get a photo in front of the house without people behind us. We gave up as the place was crowded.

IMG_2125

We walked Lover’s Lane and the Bubbling Brook trails and relived parts of the books.

IMG_2134

We visited Lucy Maud Montgomery’s gravesite next to where her old school house sat.

IMG_2141

We have more to explore but will have to come back another day because everything closed at 5pm.

We came back to the campground and spent the evening walking up and down Cavendish Beach looking for shells.

Battery Park Exploring

This morning we headed back down to the canal and locks to go fishing. The found out the campground loans poles so we were all set. You don’t need bait just a shiny something on the lure. We would challenge the lack of bait! We tried and tried. We followed the directions of how to “jig” and no luck.

IMG_2057

We tried and tried for quite a while.

IMG_2059

IMG_2062

Mom and I together caught this awesomely cool squid tentacle. Just the tentacle. Sorry Mr. Squid.

IMG_2065

We had fun watching the sailboats tie up on the bollards in the locks.

IMG_2069

We enjoyed our day.

IMG_2070

We watched some crazy scuba divers jump off the 10 foot high wall. Mom was worried there would be the need for emergency care. They were older men who looked in no condition to scuba diva let alone off a high wall.

IMG_2076

We had lunch and then went out for ice cream and came back and enjoyed the breeze at the site.

Battery Provincial Park in St. Peter’s, Nova Scotia

We arrived early to the campground since we got off the ferry so quickly. They told us the people weren’t off the site yet but we could go park the motorhome in a spot near our site. When we got unhitched and parked Mom saw the campground host, who just happened to be at our site, and wandered over to say hello. She jokingly asked how long until he people would be off so we could plan our day. Well, they thought they left the next day! OOPS! After working out some bumps with the front office we were able to swap to another site. It is #30 on top of a hill with a spectacular view.  The space was HUGE as well.

IMG_2024

The view out the back bedroom.

IMG_2022

We are still amazed with our luck given that the campground was so packed they had people in temp sites along the roads.

IMG_2025

Even the entrance had units tucked in all open areas they could fit.

IMG_2026

This WAS our site we were supposed to be on. It is unlevel, small and no real view as it was all trees in front.

IMG_2053

We drove (although we could have walked) over to St. Peter’s Canal NP. We watched tons of lion’s mane jellies in the water.

IMG_2027

IMG_2033

We waited for a boat to come through the canal and locks.

IMG_2035

Our patience paid off and a huge sailboat came chugging along through the swing bridge first.

IMG_2037

IMG_2040

We ran to the locks to watch the boat go through.

IMG_2041

When they entered the locks and tied up to the side for their “dip”.

IMG_2043

Once the level lowered they untied and cruised off into the lake.

IMG_2048

We had a campfire and s’mores and hotdogs (well MOM had a hotdog) and played around the campsite the rest of the day. Near sunset we were invited to a impromptu musical even at the teepee neat the campground hosts. A man, who happens to be an Elvis impersonator, was staying at the campground for the night. They convinced him to put on a show! It was awesome we sang along and clapped and had a great time.
